Legion Of Mary Envoy
An envoy from the Roman Catholic society of the Legion of Mary, which has its headquarters in Dublin, Mr H. O’Carroll, arrived in Christchurch from Auckland last evening. A civil servant, employed by the Irish Department of Defence. Mr O’Carroll has obtained four months' leave of absence to visit the branches of the society in Australia and New Zealand.
The Legion of Mary had a membership of about one million in 150 countries, said Mr O’Carroll Its aim was to encourage lay Catholics to take a fuller part in the work of the Church. Its membership was not confined to women but included members o* both sexes of all ages. The society was founded in Dublin in 1921 and had been established in New Zealand .fo. 28 vears. Mr O’Carroll will address members of the Legion of Mary at Maryknoll on Tuesday evening and the chairman will be the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, the Most Rev E M. Joyce. On Wednesday Mr O’Carrol] will speak at the • Catholic Men’s Luncheon Club and then he will leave by plane for Dunedin late in the afternoon.
