New Cycle Track
About 10 years ago. a block of land ■’as given to the Paparua County Council for a sports ground at Hornby. As soon as it became known that a sports ground was to be formed, the Hornby Cash Cycling Club wrote to the council asking that a certain area be set aside for a cycle track—a considerable request, for the cost of laying out a cycle track would be probably aa costly as the laying out of the rest of the ground for other sports.
About five years ago. discussions were held between the council and the club and it was decided to put down the track.
One of the finest cycling tracks in New Zealand now graces Denton Park Lt is a quarter of a mile in circumference and is banked to the international standard of 45 degrees. The surface is bitumen and is very fast. For the last three Saturdays, cyclists have been on the track and even in these preliminary rune fast times have been recorded. Last Saturday. a five-mile event was run and a good time of llmin 58sec was-estab-lished.
On Saturday the track will be formally opened when the Hornfcy Cash Cycling Club will stage a cycling carnival. R. Johnstone, the Auckland captain of the New Zealand road team at the Empire Games at Perth, will be appearing; so will J. Bigwood (Waikato), runner-up in the last national sprint championships. These two win be seen in special invitation races and sprints. Local medal winners at the championships. C. Fitzgerald (third in the senior 10-mile) and D. Gutry (second in the junior 1000-metre time trial and third in the sprint and five miles) will also be competing. Dunedin’s top riden wM be racing.
