New Plymouth Port Idled By Dispute

(New Zealand Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH, April 9.

New Plymouth watersiders stopped work this afternoon after a dispute over the discharge of general cargo from the 6461ton freighter, Springbank.

The Springbank is also carrying sulphur from the United States.

Two gangs working general cargo in the Springbank sought the same rates of pay as the men unloading sulphur from the vessel. There were two hatches on general cargo and two on sulphur and the wind was blowing sulphur dust over the men working the cargo. An extra 2s 3d an hour is paid for handling sulphur. There are 226 watersiders involved in the stoppage. Twenty-six of them have already been placed on penalty. The only ship to sail from New Plymouth today was the Port Macquarie She finished discharging at noon and was making ready for sea when work stopped on the Springbank.
