S.P.C.A. STREET APPEAL
More Than £BOO Collected More than £BOO had been collected late last evening by the Canterbury branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in its street appeal. Its aim was to collect £l2OO so that the animal ambulance, which is worn out, could be replaced. Twenty or more collectors have still to return their boxes and postal donations are expected to arrive.
“The public gave very well," said the secretary (Mr D I. Williams). “A lot of people gave, although probably not as generously as in the past. But I am happy with the result."
Girls from St. Margaret’s College, the Christchurch Girls’ High School, and the Avonside Girls’ High School helped to collect before and after school. “It has been the schools that have boosted the collector force,” said Mr Williams, “but the response of the public to a request for collectors was the best ever."
The final amount was augmented by £l4O from a produce stall in Cathedral square and postal donations, of which £l7O had been received yesterday morning.
