Dr. H. A Brant, of Chnstchurch, has passed the final examination tor the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He will now take up a registrar’s position at the Hammersmith Poet - Graduate School of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. London. Mr R. L Carter, of Tauranga. was appointed clerk to the newly-constituted Malvern County Council at the council’s first meeting yesterday. Mr Carter, who was deputy county deck to the Tkuranga County Council. replaces the clerk of the former Malvern county, Mr F G. Howe, who has been appointed to the South Canterbury Catchment Board Mr Carter will take up his new thrtiee in June. Mr E. A. Ptabke. a Wellington architect who has designed many commercial buildings, churches and private houses in the 24 years he has been in New Zealand. has been appointed to the chair of architecture at the Academy of Vienna.— (PA.)

Air Commodore William Vernon Crawford-Compton, bora tn New Zealand, has been appointed senior Air Staff Officer in the Near East Air Force, the Air Ministry announced—London. April 5. Mr V. D. Stace, erf the staff of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed an economic conxdtant with the Food and Agriculture Organisation.— (PA) Mr C. W. Mack has been appointed as director of penal education in the Justice Department. He was formerly director of Army education and welfare.— (PA.)
Permit Painting.—Portrait painting instruction will be offered for the first time at Ashburton by the adult education department of the University of Canterbury Artiste of some experience made the request, and Mr Frank Gross wil] begin classes next Monday.
