Waipari Picked For Sleepy Fox Stakes

“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND April 1 The prospect of tome excellent preliminaries for Ellerslie is drawing widespread interest to the Te Aroha Jockey Club's mid-autumn meeting tomorrow. Waipari and Sir Henry are two oi the Easter Handicap hones expected to compete. In the Piunket Handicap there is ■ crowd of Great Northern Champagne Stakes candidates. waipari and Sir Henry are down to meet at weight-for-age over a mile—the distance of the Easter Handicap—in a new event at Te Aroha. the Sleepy Fox Stakes. Both have many admirers for. tlie big Ellerslie mile and a good showing tomorrow would bring them further into favour. Thirteen horses were left in the Sleepy Fox Stakes when acceptances closed last Monday. One or two look out of their depth and the most notable besides Waipari and Sir Henrv are Fair Filou. Nerula Expedite and the Taranaki visitor Golden Muse. It will be a surprise all the same if one of them beats Sir Henry and Waipari. With 9-1 apiece Waipari and Sir Henry will be meeting on just about the same terms as at Ellerslie on Saturday week when Waipari will be carrying 8-12 and Sir Henry 8-13. An eight-year-old gelding Waipari managed a fourth at Tauranga last Saturdav. That looked full of promise. Sir Henry has not raced since he finished fifth in a mile at Trentham on March 9 Expedite, the only three-year-old candidate, has some solid recent form behind her but site v as hardly good enough at Takarini yesterday to be reckoned a fair chance this time. The ouestion with regard to both Fair Filou and Nerula is whether they will be ready to run a hard mile right to the finish. Fair Filou has had one sprint —at Tauranga on March 23 after a spell and Nerula has not raced for more than a year. The T.A.B. double will be on the President's Handicap and the Nrarua Handicap. Tn the President's Handicap Commodore Roberts. On Purpose, and Ena Harkness are three of the possibilities With the scratching of Final Command the field for the Ngarua Hand'cap seems even. Two which have anv amount of abilftv are Kitty Kildare and Bonnie Dee. Conditions promise to be very favourable. The fine clear weather of the last few days has brought the going into excellent order.
