Carnal Knowledge Charge Dismissed

A charge of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl aged 13 years against Colin Richard Hazeldine, aged 19, of Christchurch, was dismissed by Messrs W S McClymont and D H Copeland, Justices of the Peace, in the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth on Thursday. The allaged offence was stated to have taken place at Rapahoe beach on January 5. At the conclusion of the evidence of the girl concerned, and her 18-year-old companion. Mr A B Lawson. counsel for Hazeldine submitted that it would be a waste of public money to send defendant for trial at the Supreme Court He asked the Justices to take into account the fact that the girl had previously given evidence against another young man, on a similar charge which had been dismissed by a magistrate After a brief adjournment M. McClymont said that after consideration of the evidence, the Court was satisfied that it was not sufficient to warrant the case going forward.
