Religion
What is our Gospel? L. G. Geering. Presbyterian Bookroom. 43 pp. For the forthcoming conference (February 1964) on Faith and Order, sponsored by the National Council of Churches of New Zealand, this booklet has been prepared to aid delegates and church members in the consideration of what the churches really mean by the "Gospel.” There are seven studies, three by groups and four by Principal L. G. Geering, of Knox College, who also edits the production. The group presentations are uneven and ordinary. The four by Principal Geering are excellent studies, firm in treatment, concise and stimulating. The theme sequence is: Why ask the question?, Isn’t the Bible dear enough?, Didn’t it all happen in history?, What difference can science make?. How can other religions compare? Doesn’t the church make it dear?, What then is our Gospel?. Notice is taken of the resurgence of Buddhism. Islam and Hinduism. The place and value of science in our modern world is dealt with frankly and Should alley the fears of many who think that science is the deadly enemy of religion. Altogether this is a valuable booklet and should be illuminating to the rank and file members of the churches and kindle interest in the forthcoming conference.
