YOUNG READERS
Joey and the Magician, 117 pp. Joey and the detectives, 114 pp. The Mystery of the Pay-snatchers, 176 pp. Each by Robert Martin. Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd.
These three new books by one author are released simultaneously but are graded in level of interest and reading ability, chiefly for younger boys. The pair about Joey have the instant appeal of familiarity from the nine earlier books with the same hero. The one about the magician is a charming little story of Joey’s brief excursion into circus life and is notable for its short words. The detective adventure is more sophisticated, the story of boys’ investigating Joey’s own father as he co-operates with the police by co-oper-ating with thugs in a major bank robbery. The pay. snatchers’ episode is even more improbable ami, besides involving boys again in the detection of crime, exposes them to a tot of coarse talk. Mr Martin *8 simpler tales are more attractive.
