PORTUGAL IN AFRICA
Sanctions Call By U.N. Body (N.ZJ’.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, April 4. The United Nations Security Council is not likely to adopt a call by 19 countries for economic and political sanctions against Portugal because of her African policies. Reuter’s United Nations correspond! t said that toe resolution passed yesterday by the 24-nation Colonialism Committee would have to be accepted by Britain and toe United States —both members of the Security Council —and they had strongly deplored toe resolution. The resolution, initiated by the Afro-Asian group, drew the council’s immediate attention to Portugal’s refusal to abide by United Nations decisions on her African territories. It recommended “appropriate measures, including sanctions.” against Lisbon. Informed sources predicted, however, that toe SecretaryGeneral (U laant) might be asked to u his good offices with the Portuguese Government before there was any recourse to the council He is due to visit Europe next month. Five delegations abstained from voting—Australia, Denmark, Italy. Britain and toe United States. Portugal regards Angola. Mozambique and Portuguese Guinea as overseas “provinces,” and rejects the United Nations General Assembly’s claim to intervene in their internal affairs.
