SWIMMING Wharenui Junior Olympics Success For Miss J. Reid

A crowd of about 400 spectators and 200 competitors were at the Coronation Pool, Riccarton. on Saturday for toe Wharenui Junior Olympus. There were some good races in toe finals and several close finishes. Close competition was evident in the breaststroke and butterfly events of toe under-13 grade between M. Hindle and M. Johnston; each won an event with excellent performances in unfamiliar styles. Hindle also took the 146 2-3yds medley for good measure. Miss J. Reid, a champion junior freestyle swimmer at the national championships, discarded that stroke for the day and won all toe other events: toe medley, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly races. Wharenui teams were particularly successful in toe relays, winning six of toe nine events.

The organisation of the meeting was praised by swimming centre officials and by Miss M. A M. Chamberlain, the Empire Games athlete, and Mr D. Young, the All Black hooker, who presented toe prizes. The victory ceremony was one of the most spectacular items of the programme. With assistance from the junior members of the Fire Brigade Band, who provided a fanfare, and the Riccarton Midget marching team, it was held under a spot-light and coloured lights. The success of the Olympics this year could ensure that, with toe centre’s co-operation, toe fixture will become a regular part of Canterbury swimming.
