National Council Of Women

Sir, —You report the annual meeting of the Canterbury branch erf the Federation of University Women supporting a resolution for disaffiliation from the National Council of Women. This appears to be a strange step by an organisation which represents a group of highly intelligent and educated women. Surely their function should be to lead the community, not to stand aloof from it. For over 60 years, it has worked to raise the status at women, and to raise the standard of education. It has encouraged women to accept civic responsibilities and in every way has broadened the outlook of the community in general and of women in particular. The National Council is built on a broad basis, representing over 50 women’s organisations. Opinions at women of vision, of many interests, are sought and encouraged. Surely this is where the opinions of university women, with their trained minds and their wide outlook can guide and influence others. —Yours, etc., DOES EDUCATION BROADEN THE MIND? March 29. 1963.
