The author of this care-fully-written book lays stress on the art of selfexamination. In the examined life there must be room for prayer, which is not only speaking to God but also listening to God. As a guide to the devotional life and a chart of interior communion this simply-written book is valuable. Seven Sins And Seven Virtues. Karl A. Olsson. Hodder and Stoughton. Paperback. 124 pp. The author, an American scholar, is a gifted writer who makes his book tingle with interest. Here is no cloistered scholar but one who walks the ways of men, knows men. and speaks a language they understood The Seven Deadly Sins as they are called (Pride, Envy, Anger. Sloth, Avarice, Gluttony, Lust) are examined with devastating frankness. Naturally he draws from Dante’s “Vision,” and his interpretations are acute and modern. The Seven Virtues (Wisdom, Justice. Courage. Temperance. Faith, Lotto. Hope) are contrasted with the Seven Sins with perceptive insight. The conclusion of the matter is the need of saintliness as a way of life. This little book will find many readers.
