Canterbury Judo Titles Today

JV OMEN will compete for the first time in ehampumstups m Ne w ZeaUnd when the Canterbury B - '””'’**”' Judo League

holds its 1963 contest in Christchurch today. Ten women have entered for their section of the championships. Four of them are married. The men’s section this year is divided in two. There will be a five-man team championship with a new trophy to replace the Yukio Tani Cup which was won last year by the Can-Am-Ju Club outright with three consecutive wins; and an individual title. Seven teams have entered. The object of the division is to encourage lower grade “judoka.” Formerly, it was possible for a team to field five top-graded “black belts” and have—for Canterbury—a virtually unbeatable side. . The introduction of individual competition (for which there has been 12 entries) will sort out the best of the best from the three top classes —black, brown and blue belts. The teams’ competition will be confined to the lower-rated orange, yellow and white belts.
