RACING Persian Star Wins First Leg At Whangarei

"The Press" Special Service WHANGAREI, March 29. A well-earned success came the way of Persian Star in the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the Mclnness Handicap, at Whangarei today. It came after a third at Pukekohe in the Paeroa Cup and a fourth in the Rotorua City Cup—his first win for more than 12 months.

In his previous attempts this year, Persian Star was more than once unlucky. This time everything went his way. His rider, D. F. Cameron, got him through an opening on the inside with about three furlongs to go. The way was clear for him for the rest of the race and he reached the post with a good length on Summer Spray. On the strength of his sound racing beforehand and good training work at Takanini Persian Star was s a =trong each-way favourite and he paid £3 4s 6d and £1 10s 6d, win and place. Persian Star is a four-year-old gelding, by Golovine from Operashah, being raced and trained by his breeder, Mr M Marinovich. A year or so back, he looked on the way to great heights and as long as the autumn is not wet he might add one of the good middle-distance handicaps at Ellerslie to his tally. Summer Spray, which chased Persian Star gamely right to the finish, was an outsider, and Summer Morn (third) was also at good odds. The disappointment was Dashing Star, the second favourite, which could manage only fifth. As expected by most betters. Brown Hair won the second leg of the T.A.B double, the Maungatapere Handicap. Brown Hair went like a winner all the way and collared the pacemaker. Servitor. as soon as her rider, A. M. Dulieu, asked her for an effort. With a furlong to go Brown Hair had command and she won with a bit in hand by nearly a length Brown Hair is a four-year-old by Gold Nib from Golden Idea, owned and trained by Mr E. C. Pipe at Avondale. Today’s win was her second on end.

The double, Persian Star and Brown Hair, paid £8 5s for £l. and the win and place retains on Brown Hair, a hot favourite, were £ 2.5 s and £1 10s 6d. Conditions were good, the weather being fine and the track fast. The totalisator on-course handled £36.680 10s, including £5977 10s on the double, against £43.756 10s last year. Mattiwilda. Summer Morn and

Dashing Star began quickest in the Mclnnes Memorial and Summer Spray lost ground. Mattiwilda and Wlmmera King were just about together in front to the first bend. Mattiwilda then sprinted clear.

With a round to go Mattiwilda was in the lead by three lengths from Summer Morn and Wimmera King (inside). Dashing Star came next, then Smart Move and Persian Star. Going very freely Mattiwilda kept well In command along the back. At the half-mile she was out by four lengths from Summer Morn, which was a couple of lengths clear of Fairenda and Wlmmera King. Persian Star was a little further back trying to make ground on the inside. The luck of the running favoured Persian Star in the next two furlongs, and at the turn into the straight he got up on the inner of Mattiwilda and Summer Mom, which were together tn front. In a few more strides he reached the front and he carried on well to win by a length from Summer Spray which finished well on the outside. Summer Mom was a close third then there was a length to Blue Heather. Dashing Star was fifth, a length ahead of Smart Move and Mattiwilda. Then came Gullfax and Wimmera King. Miss Haye was tailed off Chased Leader Servitor began quickest In the Maungatapere Handicap and was in front by a length in the first furlong from Brown Hair and Faircourt. There was a length then to Advocacy. Fontamara and Eistedfod. Servitor continued with the pacemaking into the straight where he had a length and a halt on Brown Hair. Fontamara (wide) came next, then Advocacy. Once in the run home Brown Hair set out after Servitor. There was a length to Advocacy (third) which shaded Fontamara Results:— NORTHLAND HIGH-WEIGHT, £350, Ijm.—3/4 NELITA (4) 9-8 W. J Mudford 1: 1/1 PIN MONET <1) 10-8 P.
