S. AFRICAN TOUR

Winifred Atwell May Refuse (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, Mar. 28. The coloured “pop” pianist, Winifred Atwell, has been invited to tour South Africa, the “Daily Mirror” reported today. But Miss Atwell may not make the trip—because her husband and manager, Mr Lew Levisohn, is white. South Africa’s Immorality Act forbids whites and nonwhites to co-habit. And “mixed marriage” visitors are not usually welcome, the newspaper said. Miss Atwell said yesetrday: “I couldn’t go without Lew. I would love to go there if I thought everything would be all right. But I would be quite lost on my own.”

Mr Levisohn said Miss Atwell had been offered a three-week tour of multilingual theatres, including appearances at a 1400-seat ncr. European theatre in Cape Town, the “Daily Mirror” reported.
