Pit Stops

Twenty-one entrants took part in the Volkswagen Owners’ Club’s gymkhana at Rolleston last week-end. There were six events. The winner was M. Maze, with R. Hawkins second and R. Barker third. Single events were also won by Miss H. Milner, and R. Walton. The Rallies and Trials Enthusiasts’ Club’s autumn map-reading rally last Saturday, an intereLuib event, was won by J. Sangster-Mns Sangster (MG 1500) for the MG Car Club. Second place went to Mrs J. White-Johnson-A. White-Johnson Citroen (R.A.T.E.C.) and third was the B. T. Holmes-D. C. McElwee Morris 1000 (Canterbury Car dub). Fourth place went to W. Cheeseman-B. Bastion in a Volkswagen (Canterbury Car dub) and fifth to the T. D. Craig-N. Ryde Mini (MG Car Club). The event was run over good roads but several cars had mechanical bothers, and several failed to finish. The casualties included a control car manned by Mrs P. Bell and J. Rapson, which expired by the side of the road with a flat battery, and was eventually rescued by a competitor after a long wait. Another competitor had his windscreen shattered by a stone thrown up by a non-competing car, but continued the event. Yet another competing car had its muffler fall off and later broke a speedometer cable, which made navigation somewhat tricky. The event itself was extremely interesting and showed a great deal of hand work by the organisers.

The Canterbury Car Club’s night rally on March 21 was won by W. Cheesman—R. M. Moore (Volkswagen) with R. Peiryer— S. M. Andrews (Renault) second and R. A. Taylor— Miss P. Robinson (Hillman) third. Fourth place went to B. H. Drewery— B. W. Cullins (Velox) and fifth to N. L. Morriss—R. Allchurch (iHiMiman). The event lasted two hours and a half and the 23 cars entered covered about 41 miles. ¥ ¥ ¥ The support given by car clubs in the Canterbury area to the Autumn Map-reading rally run by the Rallies and Trials Enthusiasts’ Club last Saturday was pitiful.
