Records Fall At Monza

IN an endurance run on thei Monza circuit in Italy, between March 8 and 13, a I

production Jaguar 3.8 litre Mark II saloon covered 10,000 miles at an average speed of 106.58 miles an hour. In addition, the car set four new world records in its engine capacity class (3000 c.c. to 5000 c.c.) for three days, four days, 15,000 kilometres and 10,000 miles. The new records are: three days at 107.02 m.p.h.; four days at 106.62 m.p.h.; 15,000 kilometres’ at 106.61 m.p.h.; and 10,000 miles at 106.58 m.p.h. All are considerably higher than the previous records which were held by a two-seater sports coupe. Driven in turn by a team of five drivers, led by former world champion motorcyclist, Geoffrey Duke, the Mark II saloon rain continuously, stopping only to refuel and change tyres and drivers. The run was successfully completed in spite of very poor weather, with rain during the day and fog at night. In addition, the circuit was in

poor condition after extremely cold weather and, as a result, the car was subjected to a tremendous battering.

In spite of the vary high average speed set for the run, the saloon’s petrol consumption was approximately 14 m.p.g.
