NEW LIBEL TRIAL
Lords Uphold Order (N.ZJ’.A.-lteuter—Copyright) LONDON, March 26. The House of Lords today upheld a judgment of the Court of Appeal ordering a new trial of two libel actions against the ‘‘Daily Telegraph" and the “Daily Mail.” The five law lords dismissed an appeal by Rubber Improvement, Ltd., and the company’s chairman, Mr John Lewis, against the order for new trials. They were awarded a total of £217,000 damages in the original trials. Actions were brought after the newspapers reported, on December 23, 1958, that the police fraud squad was investigating the company’s affairs. The damages were set aside by the Appeal Court as “excessive and unreasonable.” The Lords concurred with this judgment today.
