Matter For Pertwee

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Mar. 28. When the Navy moves its training base from Motuihe Island to Fort Cautley later in the year, the establishment will lose a mildly profitable sideline in pig-farming. For a number of years H.M.N.Z.S. Tamaki has maintained a few Large White pigs, and the profits from the sale of fattened progeny have been used to provide the establishment with small extra luxuries. Pig-raising began by

way of a hobby and has continued in a small way ever since.

The pigs are run from a self-supporting “pig fund" and kept in an up-to-date sty. They are reared with a scientific eye on weights and feeding measures. When the training establishment moves, however, the porkers will have to go. So also will the few fowls that supply their owners with fresh eggs. There will be no room for livestock at Fort Cautley.
