Cycling Perils

Sir, —The law should forbid cyclists riding two abreast. I have seen school girls, meandering side by side, deep in conversation in the very thick of the traffic, inviting everyone to run them down. To avoid them, buses are forced into the middle of the road putting them on the wrong side to meet the coming traffic. Why two abreast? The reason is, a bicycle does not take as much room as a car. This argument, strange as it may seem, has bamboozled all authorities. What if the mini cars, claiming that they take no more room than a van, follow suit? Where will we be then? Even on quiet roads this habit can cause complications. A bicycle is so vulnerable, so easily knocked over, that for their own safety, single file should be the strict rule for all.— Yours, etc., BICYCLE SENSE. March 28, 1963.
