Nuclear Project

Sir, —In your editorial you take to task the Institute of Nuclear Science for suggest-

ing that Sir John Cockcroft might be asked to propose a project for them. There is, as you say, no shortage of projects. Many active scientists are asking useful but relatively tritrial questions that could be answered by scientific inquiry, and any thoughtful person can ask important questions whose answers are out of reach. It takes a great scientist to ask important questions which could be answered by scientific endeavour. It appears from the report that we have a group of scientists in the Institute for Nuclear Science who are able enough to be self-critical and humble enough to imply publicly that their choice of projects might be improved by seeking the advice of a great scientist. They must be more than usually able, and their proposal should have public support.-w-Yours, etc., W. S. METCALF. March 27, 1963.
