MARKET Easier Trend In Store Sheep Values

There was an easing for most classes of store stock at Addington market yesterday, though entries were smaller than last week. Although the store lamb entry was not as big as last week’s, it was still sizeable. Values for wether lambs'were 2s to 3s a head cheaper, and only the best of the ewe lambs held to late rates, with plainer types easing. The two-tooth ewe entry was a little smaller than last week’s but included a very good selection of Romneys, some of which came from the southern part of the island. Passings were not uncommon and the sale was considered to have lost something of its recent buoyancy. In the older ewe section there was again a large proportion of secondary sorts and these were more difficult to sell, although the odd good pen of sheep was still in demand at good rates. A big consignment of Merino ewes and wethers was entered by Mesopotamia station, and these made up to 28s for younger ewes and to 26s for wethers.

The entry totalled 18.651 compared with 26.837 last week and included 7563 store lambs (12,337 last week) 2232 two-tooth ewes (2490), 6796 older ewes (8764) and 2060 wethers (3246).

STORE LAMBS After the exceptionally heavy offering last week and a further decline in the freezing schedule it was not surprising that the store lamb market was weaker. The prolonged drying winds in some parts of the country have dried up pasture and this. too. played its part in the market. The entry was much smaller than last week, but was still a sizable yarding for this time of the year. Quality varied a lot and although there were some excellent ewe lambs forward ' the bulk of the wether lamb offering was typical of an end-of-season market, with many pens of small cull sorts and carryover lambs. There was. however, still a fairly big gallery following the sale, but competition was seldom animated and selling was not easy except on the top pens. The wether lamb market opened on a weaker note with values generally cheaper by 2s to 3s a head on the lighter to medium lambs, and even the best were easier by Is to 2s. This level was maintained with few fluctuations. Shorn lambs of quality again met a good demand but were also cheaper. Best Down cross lambs in the wool made to 40s, with good at 33s 6d to 36s 6d. average at 30s to 32s 6d and others at 23s to 27s 6d. Best Romney wether lambs realised 40s to 42s 6d, with good at 35s to 395. average at 32s to 32s 6d and others made 25s to 275. The pick of the finewools sold at 40s, with good at 32s to 365, average at 26s to 31s 6d and small and cull sorts changed hands at 15s 6d to 255. Cheviot and Border Leicester cross wether lambs made 26s to 32s 6d. For shorn wether lambs the prices for good Romneys ranged from 34s to 37s 6d, with average at 27s to 32s and small and plain at 20s 6d to 235. Average to good shorn fine-wools sold from 28s 6d to 32s and average to good shorn Down cross realised to 33s 6d.

K. F. Pickering (Oxford) sold 29 Romneys at 42s 6d and E. G. Latter (Kaikoura) sold 125 at 425. Sales of Down cross at 40s were made by the Willesden Estate (Poranui) and J. P. McGuire (Middleton), and R. M. and B. A. Banks (Whitecliffs) sold halfbreds at 40s. A pen of shorn Romneys from E. C. Beauvais (Reighton) realised 37s 6d.

Good quality ewe lambs tended to maintain late rates and there were several pens of Romneys and fine-wools which met a moderately animated sale. The market generally was not as erratic as last week, but the easier trend for the plainer and less attractive sorts was continued.

The best Romney ewe lambs in the wool made up to 655, with good Romney and Romney cross at 47s to 525. and average Romney cross at 37s 6d to 425. The two-tooth ewe entry was smaller again at 2232 head compared with 2490 last week and was made up mainly of Romneys, a high proportion of which were well-grown sheep carrying a good fleece. Some of these sheep were reported to be from the southern part of the island.

The gallery following the sale was noticeably smaller and the market looked to have passed its peak. There were quite a few passings and over all the market could probably be described as a little slacker, but relatively good money was still being paid. Romneys once more sold to better than £5 with the best making from 87s to £5 2s. with good at 70s to 82s, average 60s to 68s, and others 50s to 565. Only a few fine wool sheep were yarded and for average to good quality these sold from about 52s to 625. Some Romney Corriedales made to 65s and Border Leicester halfbreds to 60s.

The market was topped by 66 Romneys selling at £5 2s on account of an unspecified Ashburton vendor, who also had a sale at 91s. OLDER EWES The older ewe offering was also smaller in size than last week the selection totalling 6796 compared with 8764. As has been the case in recent weeks there was a large representation of secondary ewes. A number of pens of Chatham Islands Romneys were yarded and these were among the best sheep in the selection. As in the two-tooth section a rather smaller gallery followed the sale. For the odd pen of better sheep inquiry was sustained at late good rates but selling was more difficult for inferior quality with the market tending easier again although prices were not markedly different.
