Oil Spilled In Harbour

Two shipmasters were fined by Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court at Lyttelton, yesterday, on charges of spilling oil in territorial waiters, brought by the Lyttelton Harbour Board. Both pleaded guilty. Captain Erling Lob a s, master of the tanker Vesta, was fined £5O for spilling raw petrol in Lyttelton Harbour while his ship was at the oil berth on the morning of February 10. The Lyttelton Harbourmaster (Captain A. R. Champion) had noticed the petrol on the surface, Mr C. G. Penlington, who appeared for the Harbour Board, told the Court. He said the cost of cleaning the overflow from the surface was £126 10s 7d and the services of the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade cost an additional £6O The master of the Port Pirie, Captain Leonard John Skailes, was fined £lO for discharging oil in territorial waters. Noxious Weeds Three men were fined on charges of failure to clear land of noxious weeds, brought by the Noxious Weeds Inspector (Mr H. W Fawcett). Barry Thomas Norris had ignored repeated requests from the inspector to get the work done on his Governor’s Bay property, the Court was told. The defendant had three previous convictions for this offence. He was fined £7s—£so under Section 8 of the Noxious Weeds Act, and £25 for failure to clear noxious weeds. Failure to clear their properties of noxious weeds brought fines of £3 against Keith Thomas Marriot, and £4 against David Bray. Casting Offensive Matter Neil Boyle, aged 22, was fined £4 on a charge of casting offensive matter. Without Due Care Myrtle Jean Jefcoate, aged 16, a nurse, was fined £3 for driving without due care and attention. For failing to report damage after she nit a parked car ait Governor's Bay, she was fined £5. Traffic Offences On two separate charges of failure to carry heavy traffic licences, Mitchell Brothers, of Lyttelton, were fined £2 for each offence. Two more charges of having no vehicle authority brought fines of £1 apiece. No warrant of fitness, Gordon Noel Bishop, £2.
