In a leading article marking the end of the Royal tour of Australia and New Zealand. “The Times” said: “ Although in Britain the Queen’s duties are well understood after centuries of constitutional development, her function in her kingdoms overseas has not been so clear ” “The Times” said that so long as every visit involved a journey round the ebuntrv concerned there must be an exceptional flavour in it. whereas “modern monarchy as Britain understands it is knit into the life of the nation."
“As head of the Commonwealth, the Queen’s home is in London As Queen of Canada or Australia, should it not be in Ottawa or Canberra?”
