CIVIL RIGHTS LOST

Action Against 74 Syrians (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) DAMASCUS, March 24. Syria’s Revolutionary Council today deprived 74 Syrian politicians, journalists and others of their civil rights. They include the former President (Dr. Nazim Kudsi) and the Prime Minister (Mr Khaled al Azem) deposed in the recent coup. Three other former Prime Ministers are on the list—Dr. Maamotln Kuzbari, Dr. Maarouf Dawalibi, and Mr Sabri El Assali. Sixteen newspaper owners are also on the list and 13 former Army officers, including a former Commander-in--Chief, General Abdul-karim Zahradin, and Colonel Haidar Kuzbari. The decrees issued today also said politicians would be dapmived of their political and civil rights for five to 10 years on charges of “abusing their office” to serve the “secessionist regime” and of “exploiting their influence and wealth for that purpose.” Charges would also be made against journalists who “deviated from Arab nationalism" and from the “national trend” and against feudalists and economists who “forged the people’s will and dominated rule.” The decree gave everyone an opportunity to lodge grievances with a special committee of the revolutionary council for reconsideration of the penalties.
