Jet-Boats And Fishing
Sir, —We recently noticed in your. paper reference to the number of salmon being caught by the owners of jetboats in Canterbury. There is apparently a feeling of resentment among some fishermen towards boats on rivers, which is regrettable. As well as protecting the rights of jet-boaters, it is a purpose of our association to promote harmony among river users. But we must insist that the thousands of miles of beautiful rivers in our country cannot be allowed to become the exclusive domain of fishermen, which are, after all, only one section of the population. Surely there is room for all. Of course many boat owners are themselves fishermen, but we would suggest that if the jet-boat has been responsible for more fish being caught, this is probably due to their saving the lives of many flood-stranded fishermen who have thus been allowed to fish again.—Yours, etc, G. H. DAVIDSON, Secretary, N.Z, Jet-boat Association. March 19, 1963.
