LIVERPOOL MINE IDLE
Non-Union Workers (N.Z. Press Association) GREYMOUTH, March 19. The Liverpool State mine did not work day shift or back shift today because two men had been employed in its timber yard who were not union members.
The district manager of mines, Mr J. W. Glendenning, said tonight work would resume with dog watch, which entered the mine at midnight. Mr Glendenning said that the management had been given an understanding during discussions with the union officials that when men were required they could be engaged. The mine manager. Mr J. Lundon, had been given this assurance about Christmas but he had not engaged men until the present instance, although a boy had been employed earlier. He said that when vacant positions arose through men leaving or other circumstances, just sufficient men were employed. A mass meeting of the Runanga State Miners’ Union v. s held this afternoon, and it was agreed to resume on dog watch, provided the men concerned were stood down until the position has been debated between the management and the union on Thursday.
