N.Z. ARCHITECTS’ PRESIDENT
Mr G. Laurenson, Of Hawera
Mr G. Laurenson, of Hawera, was appointed president of the New Zealand Institute of Architects at the council meeting of the institute in Christchurch. He succeeds Mi A L Salmond, of Dunedin. Other officers.of the institute appointed and elected are:—

Haughey, S. A. Jellicich, and W. D. Wilson. South Auckland: Messrs N. L. Earles and G. W. Johnstone. Hawke’s Bay - Wanganui - Manawatu: Messrs J. B. Reynolds and C. F. Cawsey. Wellington: Messrs J. L. Mair, S. W. Mitch inson, F. H. Newman, and D. G. Porter. Canterbury: Messrs G. W. Lucking, K. D. Marshall, and R. W. Taylor. Otago: Messrs A. R. Black and W. A. Garth. Southland: Mr O. C. Lawrence.
Ex-officio members of the council: Messrs E. V. Dawson (honorary secretary), Mr R. B. Haughton (honorary treasurer), and Mr G. F. Dawson (chairman of the education committee). ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS i The 1963 silver medal of the New Zealand Institute of Architects (for the outstanding industrial building) has been awarded to an Auckland firm, Messrs Thorpe, Cutter, Pickmere, and Douglas, for the design of the sewage purification plant at Mangere. No gold medal for this year (for the outstanding major building) has been awarded. The Wellington firm of Messrs Toomath and Wilson has received the bronze medal (for residential buildings) for a home at Silverstream.
The awards were announced by the retiring president of the institute (Mr A. L. Salmond, of Dunedin), at the institute's annual dinner, Mr Salmond also presented the 1962 awards to the winners.
A fellowship certificate was presented to Mr S. W. Minson, of Christchurch.
