FIFTH DAY OF SEARCH

No New Gues OnMurder (NJ!. Press Association) NELSON, February 25. Investigation of the killing of the Nelson taxi-driver, Peter Banham, passed through the fifth day today. A police officer said that as more information was coming to hand the police were getting a much clearer picture of the crime. Mr Banham's bound and badly beaten body was found at Hope. 12 milea from the city, on Thursday morning. His blood-spattered taxi, meter smashed, was found abandoned in lonely Kerr street. The officer said he was satisfied with the recomtruction of the crime but declined to elaborate. They were still following up a number of leads and the interviewing of hundreds of people was continuing, he said.

Two cafeterias have been sending trays of food, including cakes and sandwiches, to the police station. A city restaurant has said that any officials connected with the investigations can have their meals free. Policemen have been working about 16 hours a day with only short spells for meals. All leave has been cancelled in the Nelson police district. A total of £lO2 16s 6d has been received in a benefit fund sponsored by Mr Banham’s workmates.

The largest sum given was £25. An Australian woman visitor gave 2gns early on Friday morning before the fund was opened.
