LANDSLIDE IN ITALY
500 Villagers Flee Homes (N.ZJ , .A.-Reuter—Copyright) NAPLES, Feb. 23. About 500 people evacuated their homes at Monaciglioni, near Naples, today as a slow landslide ripped the village in two. The topsoil of the hill on which the village (population about 2000) stands has been undermined by recent rains and by water from two streams.
As the level of the lower half of the hill gradually sank today a deep trench split the village. All buildings in the danger zone, including the parish church and town hall, were evacuated. Neighbours on the “safe” side of the village gave the evacuees shelter for the night Already a number of houses on the outskirts of the village have been destroyed or damaged, and more than 40 families are homeless.
