After his startion waggon s brakes failed, a driver sat helpless as his vehicle ran backwards down a steep road at Lyttelton yesterday morning, and went over a 60ft bank, rolling three times. The driver, Mr J. C. Tyro, aged 46, of Lyttelton, suffered superficial bruises and shock.
White driving up Hawkhurst road, Mr Tyro slowed to speak to a person. The brakes failed and the vehicle began to roll back down the hill.
It went about 100 yards, passing two cars, and then swerved along the fork of Selywn street. It went over the bank and ended up against the wall of Mr R. W. Parr art’s house.
The vehicle was badly damaged. A window of the house was broken and some weatherboards damaged. Mr Tyro was treated by two St. John Ambulance men. Messrs E. Gealy and J Duffell, and examined by Dr. N. Chambers. Although advised to go to bed, Mr Tyro went back to direct a breakdown truck recovering his station waggon. Mr Tyro said last evening that, he considered he had been very fortunate.
