Country Teams Win Four Of Six Matches

Teams from th* six Craterbxry lawn crania rabaawdatteaa again «M excellently In their annul matches with town tram* on Town-Cranny «*y at WlMing Fart ra Saturday. Th* eranlry teams won tone of tft* ahr w»w9«m» ** they 4M lart J«u, and before that in UM.

Beceuse of the heavy rain overnight it was decided early that matches would have to begin on the hard courts. The junior fixtures, which are played on the hard courts, were therefore postponed and the mixed doubles of the senior fixtures were played on the hard courts. When the singles began after lunch a shift was made to the grass. Country teams retained the ascendancy they established last year. For four years after 1965 they won three matches each year and then only two matches for the next two vears and four last year. On Saturday North Canterbury, which has beaten Town consistently for several yean, won by 18 matches to 6, Hurunui won by 13 matches to 11, MidCanterbury won by 14 matches to 10 and Ellesmere, equal with town on matches and sets, won by 218 games to 200. Town beat Banks Peninsula by 18 matches to 6 and Malvern by 22 sets to 21 when they were equal in matches. Last year North Canterbury, Mid-Canter, bury, Hurunui and Banks Peninsula were the country winners.

When ’.he auiflea wer* played the court* were still very dead and slippery and thi* affected performances. The country players scored some notable individual wins. Best was that of Miss H. Bruce, the top MidCanterbury woman, who beat the Canterbury champion. Miss S. Rich, by the surprising margin of 9-1. Miss Bruce is still a junior. Miss Rich ranked third in the province; but the Mid-Canterbury girl was very steady with her ground shots, taking advantage of Miss Rich’s many errors, especially in volleying. In fact, the six MidCanterbury women won all singles.

In another top women's match. Miss D. Smith (North Cantertiury) beat Mrs L. Buxton, 9-1. There was little surprise in thi* for Miss Smith is ranked second in the province, Miss Buxton fifth, and Miss Smith plays most of her tennis in town.

The top Ellesmere man, D. Wright, who played very competently in the town competition for United last season, won his singles, beating B. Baxter. 9-6. Wright has not played in town at all this season and this win was a fine one ’ because Baxter, although he is ranked tenth in the province, has been beating some of those above him.

Another good effort was by W. Lewthwaite (Banks Peninsula), who beat L. W. Watkins. 9-5. Lewthwaite, also noted for bi* steadiness, plays for United in the town comoetition and Watkins is ranked fifth in Canterbury. W. Hewitt, second for Malvern. beat another prominent town player. E. L.
