RACING Royal Crest - Seaend Win Wingatui Double

"The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, February 24. Royal Crest, in the Wingatui Handicap, and Seaend, in the February Handicap, were a popular T.A.B. double at Wingatui on Saturday when the Dunedin Jockey Club concluded its autumn meeting under ideal conditions. The combination paid £lB 8s 6d for £l.

Royal Crest failed by only a nose to catch Panther in the corresponding event on the first day of the meeting and was a winner at Gore at his previous start. By Llanstephan from Special Flight, a member of the successful Francolin family, he looks like winning in richer company for his owners, Mr and Mrs M. A. Forde.

The top-weights, Kumai and Windvale Lad, disputed favouritism. Kumai, which was having his first test over a distance after racing three times in sprints, was in the firing line at the furlong, but failed to sustain his effort and finished sixth.

Wind vale Lad, which is noted for his ability to handle winter going, finished strongly for third right behind Becharre, which ran her best race for some time.

Seaend. in contrast to her weak finish for third in the sprint on Thursday, ran out the distance strongly in the February Handicap to beat the second favourite, Flying Trix, by three lengths. The Wanderer, one of the veterans of the field, ran another honest race for third.

The favourite, Bold Venture, was a clear leader into the straight, but his condition gave out in the run home and he weakened to fourth. It was his first race since the Dunedin Christmas meeting. In a total doubles pool of £lB,BBB 10s Royal Crest carried 65374 10s tickets. The favourites were Wind vale Lad (12.187) and Kumai (7297). Flying Trix, with 3845 ss. tickets, and Seaend (3385) dominated the betting in the second leg. The next best supported was Corvale, with 1742 tickets. Candida Leads Candida soon took over the role of pacemaker in the Wingatui Handicap and running to the mile led Beginner’s Luck and Kumai by two lengths. Solus and Becharre were next.

Windvale Lad moved up to follow Candida, Beginner’s Luck and Kumai at the six where Becharre and Gracefield’s pride were handiest of the others.

Beginner’s Luck joined Candida running to the halfmile and these two led into the straight from Kumai, Windvale Lad and Gracefield’s Pride in line.

Windvale Lad gained a narrow lead at the furlong from Beginner’s Luck, Candida, Kumai, Solus, and Becharre. with Royal Crest coming into it wide out.

Royal Crest finished fast to win by a short length from Becharre with three-parts of a length to Windvale Lad. which beat Solus and Begin-

ner’s Luck by half a head and half a neck for third. Kumai weakened to sixth two lengths back, then came Panther, Gracefield’s Pride, Candida, and Andalusia.

Tarlon and Believe Me were last away in the February Handicap. Corvale and Seaend were first out, but Bold Venture soon gained the lead and at the half-mile was a length and a half clear of Seaend ahead of Corvale, Flying Trix, Cobble, The Wanderer,- Believe Me, Tarlon, and Cardinal King.

Bold Venture was still two lengths clear into the straight, but he was shortening stride and was headed by Seaend and Flying Trix at the furlong. Corvale and The Wanderer were close up.

Seaend drew out to win untested by three# lengths from Flying Trix. The Wanderer was three-quarters of a length back third. There was a length then to Bold Venture and half a length to Corvale, which was clear of Tarlon, Cobble, Believe Me, Cardinal King, and Athenree One. Results:—
