Samantha’s Second Wellington Cup

(Neu) Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Feb. 2(. Samantha, driven in masterly fashion by D. Mangos, won the Wellington Cup for the second year in succession at Hutt Park Raceway on Saturday night. The second leg, the Carterton Handicap, went to Peel, which led all the way and beat his stablemate, Anama, easily. The double paid £29 7s 6d for £l. The weather was fine, calm and mild and the track was fast. There was a small attendance of 7463. After the cup an objection was lodged against second placing being awarded to Master Alan (M. Holmes) on the grounds of interference to Cairnbrae (C. S. Donald) soon after the start. The objection was dismissed. D. Mangos, driver of Samantha, was warned to exercise more care in future.

Gildirect b“gan brilliantly in the Wellington Cup from Master Alan. ' Cairnbrae, which broke in the first furlong, Samantha, Grouse, Frown, and Urrall, clear of Lordship, which had begun brilliantly, and Falsehood. With two rounds to go it was Gildirect, Master Alan trailing, and Frown, with a length and a half to Samantha, two lengths to Grouse, a length and a half to Urrall, three lengths to Lordship, a length to Falsehood and a length to Gay Baron. Falsehood moved up at the mile and Lordship appeared unsettled for a stride or two when he went to follow, him.

At the bell it was Gildirect and Falsehood, Master Alan, Frown, Grouse, not well placed on the fence, Samantha, Lordship. and Gay Baron. Lordship moved up racing to the half-mile turn, but was forced four wide. The leaders were the same down the back and on the turn It was Gildirect. Raisehood, 'Master Alan, Samantha, which started forward to force Lordship wide, Grouse and Urrall, moving fast. Master Alan got the rails run. but Samantha, coming strongly all the time, beat him in a tight finish. Gildirect held on for a close third, just ahead of Lordship and Urrall, which deadheated for fourth. Falsehood was sixth, then Grouse. Gay Baron, Frown, and Cairnbrae. which was well at the back.

The field raced in Indian file for the first half of the Carter-

ton . Handicap, Peel leading Royal Attack. Dorian Gray, Goldpeen, Gold Lady, Ra Pointer. Anama, Thunderbolt, Affiliate, Trade Talk, Geordie, and Stand In. At the bell they had reformed themselves into pairs behind Peel—Royal Attack and Affiliate, Dorian Gray and Gold Lady, Goldpeen and Anama, Ra Pointer and Thunderbolt. Coming into the home bend. Peel had the rest struggling and it was left to his stablemate, Anama, to make any sort of a race. Anama finished on past beaten horses, but was still four lengths from Peel at the post. There was a length to Ra Pointer, which shaded Affiliate for third. Then came Thunderbolt, Goldpeen, Gold Lady, Trade Talk, and Dorian Gray. Direct Terms was pulled up. Results:—
