DYERS PASS ROAD
“Learner Drivers A Hazard”
Learner drivers in Dyers Pass road are a hazard, Cr. C. M A. Thompson said at the meeting of the Heathcote County Council. His garage door had twice been knocked in by learner drivers.
The council received a letter from Mr G. W. Drayton, of 1 Cracroflt terrace, protesting at the number of driving instructors using Dyers Pass road for driving tuition. He said on many days there were as many as six learner drivers with their cars at odd angles in the area between Cracroft terrace to the' bottom of Dyers Pass road.
The position was getting worse and was a definite menace to other road users, Mr Drayton said. He added that he had heard of an elderly resident living near the Cashmere school who prefers to use Hackthorne road because of the problem. Cr. L. L. Smith said that drivers had to learn to drive on hills somewhere. The council agreed that in view of the fact Dyers Pass road was a "main highway and carried a great deal of traffic, driving instructors should use another hill road when instructing learner drivers. It was decided to write to driving instructors asking them not to use Dyers Pass road.
