A CANNY SCOT
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Feb. 24.
Dame Flora McLeod, chief of the Clan McLeod, of Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye, saved the cost of about 350 words in a cablegram to the people of HelensvHle for the district’s celebrations.
The message read: “Apocrypha Ecclesiastes, chapter 44, verses 1-15 Chief and clan honour memories of John and
Helen and Isaac and Janet McLeod." Dame Flora McLeod was referring to members of the clan McLeod, some of the first settlers in Helensville, who pioneered timber milling and farming in the district. Her cablegram, sent by
letter rates from Britain, would cost about 13s. But the full text, had it been sent, would have cost more than £l3.
