YACHTING TITLE HOLDERS BEATEN IN ESTUARY RACES

More than 90 boats competed for pennants in the second Estuary championship of the season yesterday afternoon. The largest senior class was the Olympic Finn, which was led across the finishing line by P. G. Mander, of the Christchurch Yacht Club.

Mander took time from the fleet at the drop of the flag when he beat into a fresh easterly wind. He opened up a handy gap on the lead but as the wind dropped, before changing to a light north-west breeze, the boats behind closed up and B. de Thier, of Mount Pleasant, went to the front. De Thier had 10 seconds’ advantage over Mander at the end of the first of the two rounds, with G. D. Hobson a similar distance astern. Half a minute behind de Thier were three skippers within two seconds of each other —P. F. Pritchett (Charteris Bay), A. J. F. Ballintine (Pleasant Point) and B. E. Treleaven (Christchurch). . Pritchett and Ballintine retired before the end of the race because of infringements. Mander won by more than a minute from de Thier after a drifting match in the sewna round: his niargin over Wearn. Hobson, and Treleaven (who were across within 50 seconds of each other) was better than five minutes. t. Bamford had a clear-cut win with a margin of a minute and a half in the O.K. dinghy class which, with 11 boats on the water, was the next most numerous open section.
