There's Many A Slip...
T)ID over confidence resuit in the Empire Games high jumper. Miss L. Curtis, losing the provincial high jump title to fellow Games team member, Mrs V. I. Young, at the final day of the Canterbury championships last week? There is good reason to believe this was the case. The event provided some of the most interesting competition of the meeting and
showed that Mrs L. Wilson, the national champion, is making marked improvement on a limited spell of training since her return to competition. These three competitors all cleared sft 2in. although Mrs Wilson and Mrs Young took more than one attempt at some of the heights. Both Mrs Young and Mrs Wilson attempted sft Sin,
with only Mrs Young being successful, while Mias Curtis, who had been tackling only alternate heights, elected to sit out again. This height equalled the best by Mrs Young, who showed her delight by skipping out of the landing pit Miss Curtis re-entered the competition at sft 4in when both she and Mrs Young failed, however, leaving Mrs Young with the greater height and the title. Up to this stage Miss Curtis had gone through without a miss, and if she had tackled and cleared sft 3in she would have been the winner. Instead she gained second on a count-back from Mrs Wilson.
