VEGETABLE SURVEY

People in Britain who eat salad for lunch are probably upper class; those who like raw tomatoes and carrots are of high social class; while those who serve potatoes only, without green vegetables, probably have lower class origins. These are among points mentioned in a report compiled for the Horticultural Marketing Council on the greengrocery trade.
It also says housewives up to the age of 24 are not in-
dined to buy cauliflower, spring onions, beetroot or watercress. Those between 45 and 54 do not care for beans. Most housewives, while they prefer to buy vegetables at greengrocers rather than in supermarkets, believing that they are fresher and give better value, say that many greengrocers “fiddle” prices.
They also sell vegetables kept at the back of the shop rather than those on display. Many wives also think greengrocers shops are “unnecessarily dirty.” The council recommends greengrocers to clean up their shops, give honest advice to customers and stop "fiddling."
