RALLY OF IRISH
Opposite Side Of River (N.Z. Prsss Asm—Copyright) MELBOURNE. February 22. A body calling itself “the International Irish Freedom League" plans to hold a rally on Melbourne’s Yarra bank—a traditional free speech area similar to London's Hyde Park—about the same time as the Queen arrives at the nearby music bowl for an open-air concert on Sunday. The league announced today its purpose was to “enlist sympathy for the Irish people and to force England to withdraw her armed forces from Irish soil."
The rally is timed to begin 10 minutes before the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh arrive at the music bowl in parkland on the opposite aide of the Yarra river.
The league invited the Prime Minister 'Mr Menzies) and the Opposition leader (Mr Calwell) to the rally. Both declined.
