ARMY WORM DAMAGE
Infestation In Tauranga (NX Preu Association) TAURANGA, February 21. A widespread infestation at army caterpillar, or army worm as it is usually called, throughout the Tauranga county has resulted in a steady stream of reouesti for detail* of methode of treatment at the Tauranga office of the Department of Agriculture, said the senior officer. Mr A V. Allo, today. Symptoms of army caterpillar damage were quite unmistakeable, Mr Allo said. “The caterpillar* x usually attack paapalum leave* a* their first preference, but in the absence of paapalum will feed or. cocksfoot, ryegrass and most other grasses. Crops of melee also can be severely damaged,” he said.
Reports he had received *o far indicated that the area in which the infestation was heaviest was In the Apata region, between Tauranga and Katikati.
