Travel Bursary For Young Fashion Designers

(Bv

ZALIA THOMAS)

LONDON, Feb. 13. It seems that Britain can still hope to lead the ready-to-wear fashion field if the young designers from the Royal College of Art continue to produce such clothes as were seen in London this week.

Twenty-seven fashion students from the college, men and women, submitted 46 original garments, designed and made by themselves. Ten of them will be included in the Alice Edwards spring collection at prices under £lO. The two prize-winning

garments—en orange cocktall dress with a sleeveless jacket, and a short evening dress in pink with crossover straps at the throatwon for Mary-Jane Day, aged 20, and Frances Chappell, aged 23, an equal share in the £250 travel bursary given by Mrs Edwards. Both girls will go to Switzerland soon to face international

competition. Although all toe garments in toe competition were submitted lest November they were all very much in line with toe current Paris trends. There were shift dresses, informal suits, boyish waistcoats, and little jerkins worn

over contrasting blouses. Almost every dress, and even one coat, was sleeveless.

The judges had difficulty in making a final selection from the many excellent designs submitted, and it was for that reason that it was decided to award the bursary jointly. Even so, two other garments so impressed Mrs Edwards that she decided to give a cheque to the designers.
