Spectacular Fall In Wingatui Hurdles

(From Out Own Reporter)

DUNEDIN, February 21. A spectacular five-horse fall took a lot ot interest out the Taie.ri Hurdles on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at Wingatui today. Only four runners left with chances after the jump near the six furlongs, where Osman, Domain, Super Key, Brianbra, and Pyrites went out of the race. Of the four left Mangus was easily the best He ran out a decisive winner after being well ridden by his Washdyke trainer, B. T. Jones.

Mangus, which had trailed almost from the start, was having his first success as a hurdler and also his first success in the colours of his Temuka owner, Mr W. Belcher. Mangus was brought out to challenge early in the run home and had the race in hand before the last hurdle. The best of his rivals was Beau Revere, also from Washdyke. Then there was a length and a half to the weakening favourite, Hy, and a head to Ashaway. Hy and Ashaway disputed the lead for most of the race, but they were easily outaped by Mangus, which has won as an open sprinter and was fourth in a strong field of hack spinters at Royal Riccarton.

The first to go out in an eventful race was Bedlam. He crashed heavily at the mile. Osman appeared to be the first to go out at the six furlongs. Domain also misjudged his leap and crashed and in the next instant there was a scramble of fallen horses. Super Key, Briaabra and Pyrites became involved in the mix-up and were brought down.

Strong Bon Silver Kingdom sustained a strong run alongside the inside rail to beat the hot favourite Vault in the Trial Stakes. Silver Kingdom is a four-year-old gelding by the Royal Chief horse Silver King, a good winner for the Wingatui owner-trainer, D. 3. McDonald.

When McDonald decided to campaign in Australia a few yean ago the sire’s name was changed from Silver King to Stiver Kingdom. He retained the name of Silver Kingdom for all bis racing when he was brought to New Zealand but for stud purposes be has his original name. Mr McDonald bred today's winner but sold him at auction to Mrs A. A. and Mr W. 3. Duncan, though he has kept him in his atwHe. Silver Kingdom was in a commanding position from the start but he, like the omen, iookou our ot n wnen Vatitt mb aartty into a long

lead coming to the home turn.

Vault appeared to have a lot of running left in him after straightening up, but he shortened stride quickly going to the furlong, and went under to Silver Kingdom without much of a struggle. Vault just managed to last it out for second from Manhattan. The others were beaten off. Superior Jack Ketch Showed vast superiority to the other hack sprinters in the Maungatua Initcrmediarte Handicap, for which he was a firm favourite. This Rivertontrained Callander gelding cleared hack class with this win, Ms fourth in six starts for Mr J. J. Flynn. Waihoia and Fuji Yama duelled for the lead to the straight and J. R. Dowling kept Jack Ketch handy in the third line behind the trailing Lucema. Jack Ketch dashed to the front outride the furlong and away to an easy win by two lengths and a half from Golden Glymis, which came through the middle of the field. Duplex, the second favourite, was third two mote lengths back, and Tomfcdb was a moderate fourth. Brilliant Flying Lancer came from near the tail of the field for a brilliant win tn the

Tradesmen’s Handicap. This was only hie fifth start this season, and Ms first win, but he was a fair fourth in the high-weight at Ashburton on February 2.

Flying Lancer was Oanter. bury’s third winner fior the day. He is trained at Washdyke by A. A. Henry for Mr W. L. Harris and ww ridden by tbe Rtocarinn Mght-weigbi, K. Raggett. Reggett brought the Foxshar gelding down tbe outside and caught Cluny Bill in tbe het stride for a head victory. Cluny Bill appeared to have the last run at everything when he mastered Red Fox and Magto Ftate teas than 90 yards from tbe poet. To do so he had to come from test, and a bad test at tbait, at the five fariougs.
