Chief Officer Of Maori

Mr J. Irwin, aged 27, who has been appointed chief officer of the inter-island steamer, Maori, is the first of the Union Steam Ship Company’s apprentice cadets, trained under the cadettraining scheme, re-introduced by the company in 1952. to attain this rank in the Lyttel-ton-Wellington steamerexpress service. The holder of a mastermariner’s foreign-going certificate, Mr Irwin began his apprenticeship with the company in February, 1953, and has served in many of the company’s vessels. He was educated at the Feilding High School and lives in Wellington. Before joining the Maori, Mr Irwin was chief officer of the Aramoana. The present master of the Maori, captain T. H. J.
