80 m.p.h. Chase In Auckland
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 21. Speeds of up to 80 miles an hour were reached in a half-hour chase last night over 11 miles of city and suburban street* when the driver of a 1961 model car tried to evade a city traffic officer and police. The chase culminated in constables edging the car into the Otahuhu railway yard, where the driver had the choice of stopping or hitting a stationary train. He was then arrested. The police car was rammed in the chase when the driver was signalled to stop in Station road, Otahuhu. The driver refused to stop on many occasions when police cars pulled alongside and waved him down. The incident began in the inner city when Traffic Officer R. T. P. Ross checked a car at 40 miles an hour.
