Council Approves Plans For Jellie Park Pool
The Waimairi County Council last evening approved plans for a swimming pool, measuring 165 ft by 55ft, in Jellie Park. It is estimated to cost £70,000.
The pool wiU vary in depth from 3ft 6in to 4ft 6in, and will be connected to a diving pool lift Sin deep. The county engineer (Mr I. Calvert* said the object was to allow free water circulation. Mr Calvert said a fence could easily be provided to prevent young swimmers from encroaching into the diving pool. There will also be a children’s pool and a paddling pool. The pools will be tiled at a cost of £12,000 and the water will be heated. "I am sure this pool will be the finest in Australia and. New Zealand,” said Cr. V. P. Rabbitte, complimenting the works anjl reserves committee on the size of the pool. "However, I am concerned that the proposed fence may destroy the planning of the pooh” The chairman (Mr J. I. Colligan) replied that it would be an underwater fence, protruding about six inches above the surface between the main pool and diving pool. “Are we not asking for trouble calling it an Olympic pool?” asked Cr. A. E. Wag-
ner, referring to the committee’s recommendation that the council approve the plans for an “Olympic standard” pool.
Cr. A. A. Adcock: I thought we had agreed to spend an extra £lO,OOO to bring it up to Olympic standards. Cr. Rabbitte said it would take another year of planning to bring the pool exactly up to Olympic standards. “The main aim is to provide a suitable pool for the training of our county’s swimmers,” he said. “Later, we may be able to place the pool at the disposal of overseas swimmers.” The council decided not to refer to it as an Olympic standard pool.
