GALE LASHES AUCKLAND
Poles Snapped,
Craft Sunk
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 21
Gale force winds, with gusts reaching 66 miles an hour, lashed Auckland early this morning. A number of small craft in the harbour were sunk at their moorings or smashed on the shore. Power and telephone lines were snapped and branches tom from trees.
Huge waves pounded across the waterfront drive for more than an hour.
Polyantha, a four-year-old racehorse, owned by Mr M. Paykel, was killed during the night by a live electric power line blown down by the gale. She was resting on the property of Mr C. M. Jillings, a Takanini trainer, and was almost ready to resume training.
A £2OOO launch moored in Hobson Bay came adrift and was smashed to bits against the rocks under the piles of the Auckland Harbour Board dinghy lockers-, while passersby watched helplessly. Twelve small yachts, drawn up on trailers on the Howick foreshore, were all blown over by the wind.
