The number of registered job-seekers in Australia rose during January by 10,550 to 111,807 or 2.6 per cent, of the work force of 4,300.000. Announcing the new figures today, the Minister for Labour (Mr William McMahon) said it was significant that the increase was the smallest in January since, > 1055. Mr McMahon said the . number now registered was 19.680 tower than a year ago. i Mr McMahon said the figures showed a growing shortage i of Skilled workers. Whereas a year ago there i were two men registered as unemployed tar every vacancy in the metal and electrical trades there were now I more vacancies than appliI cants. In the building and I construction trades there , were seven applicants for . every vacancy, now there were fewer than three.
