ATHLETICS Mackenzie Equals 100 Yards Record

The University «nd Canterbury sprinter. D. W. Mackenzie. provided the highlight of an inter-club athletic meeting at Rugby Park last evening when be equalled the provincial senior 100 yards record of 99sec, leaving his nearest rival six yards back at the finish. The feat wes something of a surprise, in a moderate bead ■wind, as Mackenzie had been unable to match A. G. Steel in the title event last Saturday when Steel achieved the same time with a following wind. On that occasion, however, Mackenzie may have been upset left slightly at the Another very encouraging effort waa achieved by the holder of the National javelin title. Miss J. Ryan, who had one of her best throws of the season, with a distance of 120 ft Un.

Now promoted to senior ranks, X. Bell, after his recent series of junior half-mile record runs, was untroubled to win The Farmers’ trophy for the 1000 yards with a comparatively slow time of 2min 17.1 sec.

Canterbury marathon champion. G. T. Wilson, showed little sign of his gruelling title race of Saturday by comfortably winning the six-mtle road race for the "Sanitone" Cup. His time was 33min 41.8 sec. Secondary School Events There was a particularly good response to many of the events specially provided for secondary school athletes. The short, snappy programme of cup and trophy events was organised by three clubs—Toe H. Marist and University. St Bede’s College won the F. R. Brebner trophy for the post-primary schoolboys 4 x 110 yards relay, and a Papanui High School quartet gained the J. Ballantyne and Company trophy for a similar event for girls. M. Walls registered one of the best junior long jumps of the season with 21ft 4}in. Close competition was given by R. Best, who was only four and a half inches away for second.
